11 questions for Ben Zimmerman, head custodian

Ainsley McKee, Reporter

Ben Zimmerman is De Pere High School’s head custodian. He has seen the best and worst of our school. He is a man of few words, but he agreed to answer questions from the students. The following questions were taken from a survey sent out by the Crimson Aviator.

Q: What is one thing you admire about DPHS?

A: The positive attitude.

Q: What can we, as students, do to make your job easier?

A: Be more aware of cleaning up stuff when you make a mess.

Q: What grade is the messiest?

A: There really is no grade. They’re not all messy, it’s just … certain times, certain things.

Q: What is your favorite thing to bake?

A: Cinnamon Rolls.

Q: What makes you feel most appreciated for all the hard work that you do?

A: Little cards and stuff that gets sent or put on my desk or stuck on my door. Just saying thank you.

Q: What are your interactions with students like, and do you enjoy being surrounded by high school students all day?

A: Actually I do. If you can form a good relationship with the students, then hopefully things are better and we don’t go to a negative way. We go to a positive way.

Q: What is your dream or your hope for when you retire?

A: I am going to go to Washington Island to my house and fish.

Q: That was actually one of them! They said “Hi Ben. You are one of the nicest people I have ever met, but why are you not retired yet? A man like you deserves to go hunting and fishing every day and not have to worry about work!”

A: *Laugh* You got to have the means to retire.

Q: You once owned a restaurant, can you tell me a little bit about that?

A: I owned 2.

Q: Two restaurants?

A: Yes. At one point in my life, my parents owned a place called the Club Chalet. It used to be on Highway 57, going towards Sturgeon Bay. And in 1992 we bought Ziggy’s, in Allouez, and we just sold it within the last year. So, that came to an end after 28 years.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote? If so, what is it?

A: Always look forward, don’t look back too much.
