Running out of time to win a WIAA state title, De Pere High School junior cross country runner Grady Lenn has his goals set for next year.
“I want to get my revenge,” he said.
Lenn responded to being asked how badly he wants to win the boys title next year after finishing seventh, third, and second in his first three tries.
Lenn fell short this year by just two seconds to Onalaska senior Manny Putz, a now three-time champion. Grady ran the race in 15 minutes and 9 seconds. Putz finished in 15:07.
Lenn explained that he started the race off strong, leading in the first mile. The second mile was more of a battle, he notes, “There weren’t a ton of crazy moves made, but I think we both thought the other one was going to win.”
Finally, at the end of the race, Putz was able to pull away, despite Grady being ahead with a half of a mile left to go.
Lenn wasn’t the only competitor for the De Pere cross country team. These four individuals were part of the top 5 De Pere competitors along with Lenn, leading the team to tenth place; Noah Zhang, 16.22, 35th; Daniel Zhang, 16.44, 64th; Chase Deshazer, 123rd, 17.17; and James Derenne, 141st, 17:28.
Grady did not want to comment on what colleges he was leaning towards for running, although he said to “Stay tuned.”
As for the future, Lenn said, “I don’t think much changes, I’m still happy progression wise.”
He explained that because he’s gotten closer to winning each time he’s competed, his training will not change.
Bella Heideman was the lone De Pere girl at state, finishing 77th in 20:05.
