After over three decades of teaching gym at De Pere High School, Steven Newton announced his retirement. Although Newton has had a passion for a hardworking, physical lifestyle since his high school years, he is ready to move into retirement with a open mind for what the future might have in store for him.
How long have you worked at De Pere High School?
I’ve worked here for 31 years.
Where did you work before?
I worked at Mosinee for a year. I did my student teaching at D.C. Everest, then I was a long term substitute at Mosinee, then I got the job here.
Did you always want to be a gym teacher?
I did. Well, to be honest I was into physical therapy at first. I wanted to go to Madison but I didn’t get in, so instead of P.T. I just changed one initial and went into P.E.
What was your high school experience like?
I had a great high school experience, I just loved it. I went to a smaller school, which was nice. I really enjoyed it.
What has your favorite part of this job been?
Probably the connection with the kids I teach. Every day they keep me young, I’m always around 14-15 year-olds. Every year I get older, and the kids I teach stay the same age.
Who was your favorite teacher?
It was Mr. Rogers, my Tech ED teacher. He was an awesome teacher. He was the main reason I wanted to get into teaching. I loved him, he was great. He always played country music. I was a country music guy too. He had a great personality, and it was always hands on in his class. He was just very down to earth, he was a great man.
Did you like gym class in high school?
It was my favorite! We had an all-boys gym class, I was in there with my buddies. We just had so much fun. Plus I played sports in high school. I played football, hockey and baseball.
What are you excited to do after retiring?
I’m excited for the unknown. It’s gonna be like six Saturdays and one Sunday. I like to work, but it’s going to be on my terms. I hope to be busy, if I’m not then I’ll find something to fill my time.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
Growing up probably my parents. I loved my parents. My mom passed away around the time I got this job here. She had cancer. I’m big into helping with cancer. My best friend Dan Baker, my daughter’s godfather, passed away of cancer. He was a big role model as well.
I would like to say to all the students who I have taught throughout the years — thank you. It has been a wonderful journey. Remember to work hard, be kind, and live a healthy lifestyle.
