Mrs. Sarah O’Connor is a new counselor this year at De Pere High School.
Prior to her time at De Pere High School, she worked as a guidance counselor in the Waukesha School district, with her most recent year of counseling being at Mishicot High School.
Before becoming a counselor, Mrs. O’Connor was well on her way to becoming a lawyer, studying pre-law at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It was during this time that Mrs. O’Connor began to question her decision and rethink becoming a lawyer.
She noticed that lawyers usually can only try to help people after bad things have already happened, but what if there was a way to help prevent or shape the decisions that people made ahead of time? This forward way of thinking is what ultimately led Mrs. O’ Connor to become a guidance counselor in the first place.
After obtaining her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin, Mrs. O’Connor attended Concordia University where she earned her Master’s degree in counseling.
Mrs. O’Connor said that she believes in helping students through an individualized approach as she acknowledged that what works for one student might not work for another. In addition, she recognizes everybody is unique in their own way and what works best for them might not be the best for everybody else.
Finally, Mrs. O’Connor said that she encourages students to be themselves, get involved, try new things, and to never be afraid to challenge themselves. She wants students here at DPHS to know that her door is always open and she’s always willing to help out.
Besides working as a counselor, Mrs. O’Connor loves spending time with her husband and two daughters, Sage and Wren.
