I personally believe that I’ve never been wrong about anything. But now, after 3 months of high school, I’m not so sure. Here are 3 things I was wrong about and 3 things I was right about as a freshman in high school.
3 THINGS I WAS WRONG ABOUT
1.. Bathrooms and water fountains are a lot worse than expected. When I was in middle school, bathrooms were OK. Sure, there was the occasional clogged toilet or the stall that everyone avoided, but it wasn’t that bad. Water fountains were…questionable, but they all worked. Here, it’s a little bit different than I expected.
I did expect the water to be similar. I mean, it’s school water. It’s not going to be the best. But I didn’t expect most of them to not work. The few bubblers that do work taste horrible, and the bathrooms are much worse than the middle school. In some of the bathrooms, the locks on the stalls don’t even work. To sum it up, both the bathrooms and the bubblers are much worse than I expected.
2.. Homework is not nearly as overwhelming. At the middle school, teachers gave a fair amount of homework – usually around a half hour to an hour each night, depending on what we were doing. When I got to this school, I expected to get hit with at least 1 ½ hours to 2 hours every night. However, it turns out that homework levels stayed relatively similar but the work is more difficult.
3.. Older kids are either fairly nice or ignore you. Finally, I will admit I expected the juniors and seniors to be a lot different. Instead of being totally normal, I expected them to be rude and ignorant of the younger students. Instead, some of the older students are actually very kind and helpful, and when they aren’t, they are simply ignoring us. It’s a nice change from middle school where everyone was constantly being rude to other people.
3 THINGS I WAS RIGHT ABOUT
1.. Some kids look like 5th graders, while some look like 25-year-olds. When I was in 7th grade, I remember looking at the 8th graders thinking, “Some of those kids look like high schoolers! I probably won’t look like that next year.”
I was wrong.
However, this did prepare me for high school, because I realized that some kids were going to look like 20-year-olds, and some were going to look like 7th graders. I wasn’t surprised when I saw seniors that look like they already graduated college.
2.. TONS OF ACTIVITIES TO DO! In middle school, there were clubs and activities. But one of the most exciting aspects of high school, in my opinion, was the prospect of being able to join tons of clubs and do tons of activities. And so far it hasn’t been disappointing. There are so many different clubs to join – from smaller clubs like Cheese Club, Anime club, and Dog Club to larger clubs such as FFA, Key Club, and Forensics. Plus, we can do sports and theater, adding a whole new list of activities.
3.. The rules about phones are a lot more relaxed. At the middle school, the rule was phones were to be kept in lockers, shut off, and could only be out at lunch when it was raining. Now everyone uses their phones in almost every class, we can listen to music, and not once have I seen someone’s phone get taken. It’s a nice change from the constant reminder that “Your phone needs to be shut off” or the “Go put it away or I take it” threat.

I agree as a a fellow freshman but you forget about the water fountain by the gym. The older students don’t ignore you maybe they don’t hear you, after all they also have social lives.
