Imagine sitting in your car with one of your friends during lunch. Nothing seems off about the situation until your car door suddenly flies open. You spin around to see a fellow senior with a Nerf gun and a camera.
This is the exact situation that Jamison Mommaerts was in just a few months ago as part of Senior Assassin, a contest in which seniors shoot people with either nerf guns or squirt guns, get it on camera, and try to be the last one standing.
Senior Assassin is a yearly competition at De Pere High School. People pay a small fee to join, and the winner is the last one standing. This year Senior Assassin started around October, and has been going on ever since. It started with a couple hundred people.
The person with the most people eliminated is Mommaerts, who said he has eliminated a whopping 9 people. He knew right away that he wanted to do it.
“I heard about it junior year, just from the seniors I knew,” he said.
While Senior Assassin may seem like just a silly game, it can be pretty intense. Jamison himself has had some close calls.
“There were 2 times,” he said. “One time I was sitting in my car with my friend and the door opened, but my friend blocked all the bullets for me. Another time was after I got someone out, I was heading back to my car, and someone was waiting by my car.”
There is also some strategy involved.
“I hid in the back of this one person’s car for 40 minutes,” Jamison said. “I’ve also kind of backstabbed a few people. You can only have a small circle you can trust.”
Finally, I asked Jamison if he had any advice for people who are thinking of taking part next year.
“The biggest advice I would give to someone is to just give 100 percent for the first few weeks until you kind of let people know that you’re dedicated,” he said.
