In some way or another, we have all been affected by cancer. Whether it’s a family member, friend, coworker, or classmate, chances are we have all been touched and moved by the profound ways that cancer can change our lives forever in an instant.
Recently, 11th grade student Michael Hoogland was diagnosed with B-cell Leukemia, a fast-growing type of blood cancer. Symptoms of the disease include fatigue, easy bruising, frequent infections, fever, and pain. Treatment for B-cell Leukemia usually includes chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and bone marrow transplants.
A benefit for Michael’s cause will be held on January 17, 2026, between 1-7 p.m. at Gatherings 43, located at 623 De Pere Rd., in Denmark. The benefit will feature booyah, hamburgers, hotdogs, pulled pork, and even a bake sale. Additionally, several raffles will be held including a bucket raffle, 50/50 raffle, a meat raffle, and a cash bar. All proceeds from the benefit will go towards supporting the Hoogland family for unexpected expenses surrounding Michael’s diagnosis and treatment.
District nurse Krista Nelson implores us as students to help support Michael and his family during this difficult time in their lives.
“I admire his bravery, strength, and resilience, and I am here to support him and his family every step of the way,” Nelson said. “As a school community, we need to come together to help Michael and send him hope, healing, and encouragement!”
In addition to the benefit being held, there are still several other ways that we can help contribute to Michael’s cause. A website has been created featuring Michael Fight Club T-shirts and various other types of merchandise such as hoodies, crewnecks, and zip-ups.
Along with the new website, a GoFundMe has been created for Michael and his family in an effort to take some of the financial burden off of his mom, Wanda, as she misses work to care for her son.
Besides donating to Michael’s cause and supporting him and his family financially, Michael would also greatly appreciate any cards or well-wishes from anyone, as his road to recovery will be long and challenging, Nelson said.
The true significance of kindness and generosity cannot be understated, and it’s important to note that even small gestures of kindness and compassion can go a long way in helping Michael and his family throughout their battle with cancer.
