There have been a plethora of occupational opportunities at DPHS, and working in school is just another way for students to achieve their dreams, whilst also reaping the benefits of working within the building.
Carsten VerHaagh is a senior at DPHS currently working in the IT department as a Tech Intern. His duties include repairing Chromebooks and updating technology. There are very limited opportunities for working at the school, but that will be changing in the near future, as evidenced by Mrs. Wollin and the Youth Apprenticeship Program.
Opportunities are offered during the school year and the summer. A minimum of 450 hours have to be completed to meet the minimum requirements for being a part of the program. Hours during the school year aren’t very intense. Students are looking at about 2 hours per day, at least from Verhaagh’s experience.
“I don’t have to drive anywhere, that’s really nice,” said Verhaagh. “I’m not doing school all day which is nice because it’s a break. I don’t have to sit in a classroom all day. I would definitely recommend doing something like this, if you can. You’re already here, and it saves you money on gas. It’s super convenient because you work with people you’ve seen; I work with a lot of teachers, and I know these people already, so I don’t need to get to know these people.”
Mrs. Wollin’s advice for those interested is to stay aware of what is available.
“Keep an eye on things,” she said. “When I have conversations with students and send out opportunities to students, those who are the most responsive to their emails, those are where the opportunities lie.”
