Emma Hudson, a junior at De Pere HS, went to the golfing state tournament on Oct. 13-14 at University Ridge in Madison.
Emma made it to 18th place in the tournament, passing her goal by making top 20. She shot an 84 on her first day, and a 76 on her second day for a total of 160.
“It wasn’t the best overall finish we’ve ever had, but the best score there,” said Kevin Dessart, the De Pere girls’ golf coach.
Emma also qualified as an individual from her sectional, shooting an 81 at Thornberry Creek, which is a step before getting into state, and she was in the top 3 individuals.
“I enjoyed it a lot, it was really fun. A lot of my friends from nearby schools were there, so it was nice,” Emma said of the state experience.
There is definitely a chance for Emma to get into next year’s state tournament. She has shown that she is great at golf, so there is a big chance for her to go a second time.
Emma has been playing very well on her own, showing that she can play without a problem. Mr. Dessart said that Emma works better alone, only needing help when she truly needs it. To help her, Mr. Dessart prefers to focus on helping Emma with guiding her to success instead of focusing on stroke or swing problems.
“We kind of manage the course, so my goal I feel is more like almost a guide on the side to be there for her when things go wrong,” said Mr. Dessart.
During the state tournament, Emma had a great first 9, shooting a 39. Emma’s energy went out a bit at the end of day one, shooting a 45 on the second 9. On day two, Emma had a better day than the day before, shooting a 39 and a 37.
“I definitely told her on day two, ‘Keep that energy high,’ ” said Mr. Dessart.
Emma helps Mr. Dessart a lot with his coaching because of her skilled playing. She makes it easier for him to focus on other kids because he doesn’t really have to focus on her. Though, when someone joins state as an individual, the coach can spend all their time with the individual.
Mr. Dessart said, “Some of the other players who maybe need more attention actually take away from Emma.”
Overall, Emma thought that the tournament was a very fun experience and she’d definitely do it again.
“Next year will be my last chance, so hopefully (I can make it),” Hudson said.
