Parent teacher conferences set for this week

Parent+teacher+conferences+set+for+this+week

Parent teacher conferences are this week, and the teachers are excited to show their students’ parents their hard work.

Conferences were held on October 23 and 26. They are being held earlier this year, but phy ed teacher Mr. Conard believes that this is good as it lets teachers connect with parents to course correct earlier.

“In previous years we were already in the second quarter so I think talking to parents, the earlier the better,” Mr. Conard said.

Luckily, most of the teachers seem to have good things to say this year. Students are well behaved for the most part and have no major issues, according to the teachers I interviewed.

That being said, some of the few complaints I heard were absences and failing to take advantage of retests before the deadline. All classes have absences, so be sure to get them excused or made up because too many reflects poorly.

Keep in mind that failing to wear gym clothes or not working out in a P.E. class can count as an absence, especially in Speed and Strength, so be careful of that.

Mr. Turner, a tech ed teacher, has quite a few students in his four classes that have performed poorly on tests when there are retakes available and will likely miss the fast approaching deadline. Students will “maybe not necessarily recognize that they could have redone some work earlier and then it comes out during our conferences,” as he put it.

Overall, though, none of the teachers interviewed spoke of the complaints until directly asked, so it’s almost all good things being said about the students as a whole.

Privacy of the students about their grades prevents them from going into too many specifics on this, but they all said that their students were a delight. Tech ed teacher Ms. Ryba said that she will “always try to find the positive in my students, and it’s usually not very difficult.”
